  1. Florham Park girl's Sandy relief wristbands still making waves

    FLORHAM PARK – What? Still not part of the “Restore the Shore” wristband wave? Ridgedale Middle School student Amanda Bermel came up with the idea for the $5 wristbands in November, with proceeds going to the New Jersey Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.You better get them while they’re hot – and while they’re still around. The 13-year-old ordered 2,000 to sell, but the bands were so popular they were grabbed up fast, with only 150 left. Did we say popular? Make that mega-popular. Bermel’s original goal was to raise $4,000 for relief efforts. That amount, however, has nearly doubled. To date, she’s raised $7,400, said mom Cindy Bermel on Monday.   3. San Francisco 49ers create motivational bracelets!

    SANTA CLARA -- Striving to force more turnovers, the 49ers defense has created rubber bracelets as a reward. They read: "To It = See It = Get It." NaVorro Bowman coined that phrase and unveiled one such trophy on his left wrist in advance of their "Takeaway Thursday" practice.   4. W. Sayville Youth on Mission to Set a Guinness World Record

    Eric Antos is on a mission. His quest is to collect the symbolic and inspirational silicone/rubber bracelets that have become popular in the past few years in an effort to gain entry into the Guinness World Records. The 10-year-old Sayville youngster, who is an avid Guinness Book reader, embarked on his goal recently and has already collected several bracelets. “He has always liked the bracelets and he loves the book so he just decided he wanted to do it," said Stacey Antos, Eric's mother. "He sat on the couch and said, 'I wonder what would happen if I collect so many I can be in the book?' I told him if he wants to do it then go for it." Continue reading →
  5. Students band together for Gabriel Project

    VINELAND — Mark Melamed made it a mission to help those around the world overcome their struggles in life. Now that he’s facing one of his own, two Veterans Memorial Intermediate School eighth graders are stepping up to help continue the work of the nonprofit agency Melamed founded. When Samantha Rodriguez and Chris Abreu read that Melamed was forced to focus his attention on beating stage 4 pancreatic cancer, they opted to invest in Melamed’s Project Gabriel — a charity that through networking and fundraising provides medical care to children in need.
