  1. Awareness Bracelets Fight Heading to Supreme Court

    awareness bracelets EASTON, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania school district says it will take its fight against "I (heart) Boobies!" awareness bracelets to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Easton Area School District board voted 7-1 Tuesday night to appeal a decision rejecting its claim the awareness bracelets are lewd and should be banned from school. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also determined the district didn't prove the awareness bracelets are disruptive when it upheld a lower court's decision in August. The silicone wristbands  are designed to promote breast cancer awareness among young people. Two girls challenged the school's ban in 2010. Superintendent John Reinhart tells The Express-Times of Easton the ruling compromised administrators' ability to determine what is and is not appropriate in school. Dissenting board member Frank Pintabone says the district should let the matter go.   2. Suicide Prevention Bracelets Brought to Iowa Schools

    Prevention A Valley High School senior’s black rubber bracelet sales have funded a series of assemblies at central Iowa high schools to draw attention and prevent depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. The presentations include assemblies at Valley High School and Valley Southwoods Freshman High School in West Des Moines, and a public event at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Johnston Middle School,the Des Moines Register reports. The assemblies will be presented by To Write Love on Her Arms, a Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment, prevention and recovery. Maria Lind, 16, a junior at Valley, lost a friend to suicide in 2012. One such wristband is worn in honor of Rona Kallus, a Jackson-Roosevelt Elementary school teacher who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Allyson Abraham, a friend of Kallus, ordered the bracelets for her friends and family to wear.
