Saint Mary's College men's soccer player Emmanuel Sarabia is undergoing treatment for leukemia, according to a release issued Thursday by the school's athletic department.

Sarabia, a senior forward nicknamed "Morro," was admitted to Tahoe Forest Hospital last week, moved to UCSF Medical Center last Friday and was eventually diagnosed with leukemia, a cancer that attacks the immune system.

"Morro has certainly dealt with his share of adversity during his time here at Saint Mary's," coach Adam Cooper said. "But, he has such a positive outlook and work ethic. He worked really hard to successfully come back from his knee injury. I know he is going to battle through this and come back stronger and more determined than ever."

Sarabia played an integral role during the Gaels' run to the Elite Eight last season, and he has started 38 games in his Saint Mary's career.

Members of the men's soccer team will be at various Saint Mary's athletic events in the coming weeks to accept donations to help offset medical costs.

The team will also sell gold wristbands with the inscriptions "Hope is Golden" and "SMC ES." Those wristbands will cost $5 and are expected to be available at Saturday's men's basketball game against Santa Clara.
