How to create a festival themed party

Children’s parties take a lot of planning, especially if they have requested a special theme!

A festival themed party is a popular choice for kids — and could be easier to organise than you think.

Read our tips for creating your very own festival, right down to the smallest details.

1. Choose your location

Start with the location for your festival themed party. If it’s for a handful of friends and you have an average-sized back garden, then this could be the ideal venue.

For larger numbers of guests, check out the venues local to you like community spaces.

And know that your party doesn’t have to be outdoors — you can create that party vibe in an education centre, a party room or even in your own home if you have room.

2. Source your furnishings

Whether your party takes place indoors or outdoors, the furnishings will be one of the key features that really give it that festival vibe.

If you’re hosting from a large space, consider hiring tents or marquees for that festival feeling.

But if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, don’t worry! Children will be just as thrilled with regular tents pitched up in your back garden or sheets and colourful swathes of fabric draped over a pergola to create the same atmosphere.

You can use your tents (makeshift or otherwise) to create different zones, for example, a chill-out area, dance tent and food tent — kids will love exploring each and every one of them.

For seating and tables, consider putting together your own pallet furniture. All you need to do is grab some pallets and top them with comfy cushions to create seats or use them just as they are for tables — it’s that simple!

3. Book the entertainment

Have activity stations dotted around your venue with festival themed party activities like:

  • Clay modelling
  • Creating your own mask
  • Making flower or leaf garlands
  • Painting fairy houses
  • Temporary tattoos
  • Face painting
  • Creating jam jar gardens
  • Mud painting
  • Rock painting

If you’re throwing a music festival themed party, you could hire a professional singer or entertainer or even call on the services of a friend or family member who can hold a tune!

Or why not let any talented guests have a spot on the stage? Invite kids to bring their musical instruments and have a turn at providing entertainment.

4. Create a laid-back menu

Make it easy on yourself by creating a laid-back menu that requires minimal prep.

Think finger food, burgers, hot dogs and buffet-style catering that’s informal and fun.

If your budget stretches far enough, you could even hire an ice cream van, chocolate fountain or candyfloss machine to lend that authentic festival vibe!

5. Add the finishing touches

The finishing touches can really add another dimension to any party and don’t have to cost the earth.

Balloons, fairy lights and colourful cushions and throws to add a comfy touch to your festival are all easy to source and affordable.

You can decorate your tables simply with fresh or dried flowers and lanterns (choose LED candles instead of real ones for safety).

You might even want to throw in a photo booth so guests can have a fun keepsake to take home. If this is too far out of budget, you can invest in an instant camera and assign one of the adults as the official photographer.

You could also give each guest a wristband as they arrive at the party — just like a real festival!

Tyvek wristbands are a great choice, offering that real festival feel. You can have them customised with your own wording and in a colour scheme that matches your festival theme too.

Or you may wish to opt for fabric wristbands that offer the same authentic feel but can be kept after the event as a memento.

You could also customise silicone wristbands with the names of your guests and the date of the party, offering a really personal feel to the whole experience. Just like fabric and Tyvek wristbands, they’re available in a variety of colours and can be matched exactly to your party décor.
