A group of young people is helping bring comfort to the Fort Calhoun community after a woman was beaten nearly to death.Chrissy Schroeder, 19, has returned home to recover from the attack.

Police said she had been hit repeatedly with a rock.Aaron Shepherd, 19, is charged with attempted murder in the case. Samuel Irvin, 22, is charged with being an accessory.Jessica Welchert and two of her friends have been making signs and selling wristbands to passers-by to send a message of support.

"We care about Chrissy," Welchert said. "Nobody deserves this. She shouldn't have to go through this, and we are just trying to help her any way we can."She said the whole town of Fort Calhoun has been hurting since the attack earlier this week. "When something like this happens to somebody, they feel like it happened to their family," said Rose Silvus, who manages a store in Fort Calhoun.

"It's just a bad situation," said Dan Eddinger, who bought one of the wristbands."We are a very tight-knit community. It's just heartbreaking," said Matt Jensen.Welchert and her friends had a mid-morning downpour disrupt their sales, but they moved under shelter and were back in business.

"You know what? Let me give you more (money)," said one woman who bought a wristband."People get touched by it, and then they go help other people out, and they keep it up all day," Jensen said. "I think you'd be surprised how much it sticks with a person."Welchert said Schroeder is showing signs of getting better.

"Things are going great. She looks amazing. She's strong," Welchert said.Eddinger said the town is getting better, too. "I'm really happy with what is going on here and I hope it continues," he said.
