If you or a loved one has been recently diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), you may feel that this is the start of a long journey.

Know that there is no need to feel alone — according to ADHD Australia, one million Australians are living with the condition.

It’s also good to know that there are lots of ways of managing your everyday life. We’re going to take a look at ADHD hacks in this article, offering you inspiration for making life a whole lot easier!

Keep your life essentials in the same place

We’ve all experienced it — forgetting where you’ve put things down can be absolutely infuriating!

You can reduce the chances of this happening by allocating a single place where you keep all those life essentials, including your keys, phone, charger, purse or wallet and ID cards.

At home, it makes sense to have a box or basket near the front door so you can drop your items in there as soon as you enter the house.

Set up a similar system at work by placing a special tray on your desk or keeping all your essentials in a designated drawer or shelf in your locker.

Have a physical to-do list

To-do lists are a great way to keep organised, but they don’t work if you can’t find them or don’t remember where you saved them!

You may find the most effective to-do list is a simple, printed-out hard copy. Having it in front of you can help you focus your attention on what needs to be done and when.

Have a special place where you keep it at home or work, whether that’s on your fridge door or on a pinboard where you’ll be able to check in with it several times a day.

The same goes for your calendar or diary where you record your appointments. Keep a traditional calendar to write your appointments on next to your to-do list for easy reference.

Use wristbands to help you stay on track

You can use wristbands as an interactive type of to-do list to help you complete your chores.

The first thing you need to do is grab a bunch of blank wristbands — the sort you can write on with a marker pen.

So to help you through your morning routine, take a wristband for each task and write down what you need to do.

Once you’ve completed the set, put them on your wrist in the reverse order of when the tasks need to be done. That way, you can easily take off the first wristband once its corresponding task has been completed.

If you have sensory issues, make sure you opt for silicone wristbands. They’re hypoallergenic, comfortable and hardwearing, so they make the perfect wristband or bracelet for this hack.

Create a quiet space

Most people focus best when there are no distractions. For this reason, you need to have a “quiet space” at home or work where you can concentrate on getting through your tasks.

You may find that the fewer distractions, the better. So you could choose an area that either doesn’t have a window or has the option to pull down blinds so you don’t get side-tracked by what’s going on outside.

You might also want to use noise-cancelling headphones or white noise to help cancel out those distractions.

Keep your workspace clutter-free

There’s nothing more distracting than clutter, so make sure that your desk or workstation is free of anything that could lead you astray.

Schedule in some time once a week when you tidy your desk. Make sure this includes throwing away any papers or items that are no longer required.

During this window, take time to clean your desk so that you look forward to sitting down to work and take a sense of pride in what you can achieve when you’re there!

Control your internet use

It’s so easy to get distracted by browsing the internet when we’re supposed to be doing something else — we all do it at one time or another!

If your internet use is getting out of hand, commit to turning off the wifi for certain periods during the day to allow you to concentrate on your work or life admin tasks.

You can also block specific websites through your browser or a blocker app if you are finding them too much of a distraction.
