Generations of families have grown up with pets - the family dog, the much-loved cat as well as new variants on theme such as guinea pigs and rabbits. (Or maybe they're old variants on the theme!) We've always enjoyed them but new research is uncovering just how good they are for us.

Germs - they're not all bad. Our environment is a haven of microbe interaction and the fact is that most germs are mutually beneficial. Your dog is a very efficient transmitter of germs from the outside world to your world - and yes, it's generally good for you!

Allergy - you've read how allergies are getting worse (or possibly, just reported more), but interestingly, a 2002 study showed that children who grow up with an animal in the home are less likely to have pediatrically-diagnosed allergies. Why? Because plenty of microbes in the home (from the pet for example) teaches the body not to react to harmless substances like dust or food.

Exercise - getting out and about to walk the dog,and/or making it one of the children's chores means that exercise is 'forced' upon us - and this is a very good thing. We also meet people whilst out walking or socialising the dog  and this relieves stress, makes us part of the community and initiates new friendships. All of which are very, very good for us.
