Fund-raisers aim to help WHS student hit by car
SEABROOK — Friends and family members of Winnacunnet High School student Matt Denis continue to show support for the Seabrook teen who was seriously injured when he was struck by a car while riding his bike across Lafayette Road in Seabrook on April 12.
On Thursday afternoon Denis remained at Boston Children's Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition following surgery last weekend.
After a candlelight vigil on April 13 at Tuck Field in Hampton, fund-raisers are being organized for Denis and his family.
Richard Janvrin, a family friend who lives in Hampton, said he began a bracelet fund-raiser for Denis at the vigil and was overwhelmed by the response from students and the community.
The “Livestrong” bracelets, fashioned after those worn by legendary cycling champion Lance Armstrong, are blue to represent Winnacunnet High School, Janvrin said. On the outside, the message, “We support Matt” is printed, with the words “A True Warrior” on the inside in recognition of Denis' true Winnacunnet Warrior spirit, Janvrin said.
Janvrin said the bracelets, which cost $4 each, were ordered with the expectation that they would be shipped and received by the end of the week. The number of bracelets ordered climbed from an original 200 to 600, Janvrin said.
“It's just great to see a whole community step up to (support) his family,” Janvrin said. “I'm proud to do it. It's my pleasure.”
Janvrin is also working with Seabrook resident Doug Wasson to organize a three-on-three basketball tournament to be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 22 at Tuck Field in Hampton. The cost for participation is $5 per person or $15 per team.
Chad Kimball, Denis' uncle, said Denis' condition improves each day.
“He's a strong kid,” Kimball said Thursday. “He'll make it through this.”
