Last year “I love Boobies” was all the rage around the Benicia Middle and Benicia High Schools. The rubber bracelets were what the cool kids were wearing and the boys were snickering. The bracelets were meant to raise awareness about breast cancer as well as money to fund research to find a cure.
At the time Baylee Rowley was getting sick of the boys who were touting their love of boobies and she told her mother there should be a bracelet about boys anatomy. That is when “I <3 Balls!” was born. For the less hip the <3 is a sideways heart and means love.

What started as a risqué joke between some high school girls became a public service project for Rowley who is now selling the bracelets and helping raise money for research into testicular cancer, the cancer that Lance Armstrong had.

“My idea wasn’t based on him but my first check went to the Lance Armstrong Foundation,” said Rowley.
The public service project is a task she was assigned while attending the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy. This is the same camp as fellow Benicia soccer player Emily Wolfe attended.

For Rowley, delivering the message has been an eye opening experience. She says most boys at the high school aren’t aware of testicular cancer. “When I tell them about it they say ‘I can’t get cancer down there.’,” said Rowley. “Then I have to tell them it is most common in males between 15 and 34.”

The bracelets cost $4.00 and proceeds go to fund cancer research. For those wishing to purchase a bracelet, send an email to [email protected].

The girls who are conducting the public service projects are also vying for a chance to attend the Olympics in London. Those wishing to help Rowley get to the Olympics can vote for her project at the Judy Foudy Sports Leadership Academy website.
