Get the most out of your wristband with our recycling tips

If you’ve ever worn a wristband for a one-off event, you may be wondering, “Can you recycle wristbands?” once the occasion is over.

You’ll be pleased to know that recycling silicone wristbands is possible with just a little inspiration.

We present some inventive ways to reuse wristbands around the home and garden and when you’re out and about, too!

Food package seal

Recycled wristbands are perfect to seal food packages. Because they’re stretchy, silicone wristbands can be easily wrapped around the top of the bag, just like elastic bands, to seal it.

You can also use different coloured wristbands for different types of food in the freezer, making it so much easier when you go to grab something for your dinner!

Cable tidy

Don’t you just hate those untidy bunches of wires and cables at the back of your television or your workstation? They’re no longer a problem when you use your old silicone wristbands to keep them together and out of the way.

Travel mug grip

If you’ve got several silicone wristbands gathering dust, slip them around the middle of your travel mug. They make it easier to grip and offer an extra layer of insulation, too.

This hack works especially well with wider silicone wristbands.

Phone grip

In a variation of our tip for travel mugs, by stretching a silicone wristband around your phone, you have an instant grip, making it easier to hold your phone. This is a welcome hack for anyone who has arthritis or finds it difficult to grip their phone.

And you can easily cut holes to accommodate your power and volume buttons and charging port without damaging the band.

Chopping board grip

There are so many ways recycled silicone wristbands can help you grip onto household objects!

To keep your chopping board steady, wrap two silicone wristbands around it with one on the left side and the other on the right. It will keep your board from slipping, particularly if you are working on a wet kitchen surface.

Bookmark

If you love the feel of real books, you’re probably also a bookmark fan! Use fabric wristbands to mark your place. Not only will they have a practical use, but they will also remind you of the occasion where you first wore them, sparking happy memories as you read!

Book tidy

Silicone wristbands can be used to keep books bound and tidy. Place one around your book to stop it from falling open and getting damaged when packing for travel.

Jar opener

Instead of wrestling with a jar that’s difficult to get open, place an old silicone wristband around the lid to help you grip it. You’ll find it much easier to hold it securely and twist it off.

Keep a few in your kitchen drawers so you always have one ready to hand!

Plant label

Old wristbands are perfect to help you label plants, especially seedlings that are hard to identify by sight alone.

Slip a wristband around the pot, turning it inside out beforehand if there’s writing or a pattern on the outer side. Use a permanent marker to write the name of your plant for easy identification.

Souvenir

If you’ve ever been to an event like a festival and had the time of your life, you’ll want to keep some souvenirs to remind you of that happy time.

Arrange fabric wristbands from your event in a picture frame with other mementoes. This approach also works well with Tyvek wristbands, which can be made into collages once they’ve been cut from your wrist.

Craft inspiration

Use your old silicone wristband as the basis for a craft project to produce a unique new bracelet. You can stick fabric around it or add beads or sequins to create your own attractive design.

Cup or bottle ID tag

For anyone with small kids, identifying which water bottle or cup belongs to which child can be a nightmare.

Repurpose your silicone wristbands as ID tags for all types of bottles and cups. Write your child’s name on one side of the wristband and place it around the item for easy identification and to stop arguments!
