The COVID-19 pandemic has put people’s lives on hold. With physical distancing measures and lockdowns in place, many important events had to be cancelled to mitigate risks.

Whether it’s graduations, engagements, weddings or proms, most events had to be postponed in accordance with physical distancing guidelines. However, this doesn’t mean you have to totally give up on celebrating these milestones.

So, if you have something as special as your child’s birthday happening soon, there are things you can do to make sure it’s memorable. To help you out, check out the following 5 tips you can use to plan a birthday party during COVID-19:

1. Dress up your home for the celebration.

For kids, there’s nothing more fun than seeing birthday décor to mark their special day. Even if your neighbourhood party gear supplier is still closed, it doesn’t mean you can’t get creative. You can always go online and find websites featuring easy DIY party décor, like on Pinterest or YouTube.

You should also check if local suppliers of balloons and party favours are offering home delivery, so you can order ahead of time. You can even order custom food and drink token bands to make the celebration feel official – not to mention more fun for your child.

2. Let your child help decide on the menu.

Make your child feel extra special by allowing them to select part of the birthday menu. If they like chicken nuggets, spaghetti, ice cream and pancakes, include these in the party menu. It doesn’t matter if you’ll be holding the birthday party during lunch or dinner.

Another way to go about this is by serving your child’s favourite snacks and dishes from breakfast to dinner. It’s entirely up to you to prepare them yourself or order from your child’s favourite restaurants.

3. Whip up their favourite dessert.

Whether your child loves brownies, ants on a log, cookies or cake, make an effort to make them something they’ll love. There are so many DIY baking and cooking videos available online. In fact, if you’re up for the challenge, you might want to bake your child’s birthday cake.

So, get ready to see your child’s eyes light up when they see you serving home-baked sweet treats. And be prepared for the rave reviews from the rest of the family, too.

4. Prepare some games and entertainment.

You might not be able to book clowns, balloon makers, and other live entertainment for the party. But this shouldn’t stop you from holding fun birthday games everyone can participate in. You can have a birthday scavenger hunt, Pictionary, charades and musical games, and give away party favours or cute face masks as prizes. You could also plan for some home entertainment. You can enjoy karaoke music at home, hold a film viewing of your child’s favourite movie or go on a virtual family safari on YouTube.

5. Ask family and friends to participate.

Surprise your child with birthday video calls with close friends and family. You can also compile video birthday greetings and have a film viewing on your child’s special day. Another option would be to ask the people your child is close to, to send birthday cards or gifts in advance. You can present these to your child on their birthday – and make sure you document it.

Celebrations don’t stop with COVID-19

Even with COVID-19 in NSW and elsewhere, it doesn’t mean life has to stop – especially not celebrating major milestones.

In fact, you can make your child’s birthday party at home so much more fun and memorable simply by following the above tips.
