"What is your minimum order?" sounds like a barrier and is usually a misunderstanding. Minimums exist because of how wristbands are made, not to push you into buying more than you need — and once you know which costs are fixed and which scale, the number stops looking arbitrary.
Why minimums exist
Every custom run carries costs that do not change with quantity.
A moulded silicone band needs a mould made for your design. Making that mould takes the same work whether you order 100 bands or 10,000. Printing setup, colour mixing to a Pantone reference and proofing behave the same way — each is a fixed cost incurred once.
Spread across 10,000 bands, those fixed costs disappear into the per-unit price. Spread across 20 bands, they dominate it entirely. The minimum is the point below which the per-band price becomes absurd rather than the point below which production is impossible.
Why the per-band price falls so steeply
This is the part worth understanding, because it changes how you order.
Your total cost is roughly fixed setup plus per-band material and production. As quantity rises, the setup portion is divided across more bands, so the per-band figure falls quickly at first and then flattens out.
Practically: the jump from 100 to 500 bands changes the per-band price dramatically. The jump from 5,000 to 5,500 barely moves it. That is why the most useful question is not "what is the minimum" but "where is the next price break".
Tell us roughly how many you need and we will show you where the price breaks fall, so you are not paying more for fewer bands. Browse the wristband range or fundraising wristbands.
Minimums differ by product
Moulded silicone
Highest setup, because of the mould. This is where minimums are most meaningful and where the per-band saving from ordering more is largest. See the silicone range.
Printed Tyvek
Lower setup — it is a print process, not a moulding one. Minimums are correspondingly lower, which is one reason Tyvek bands suit smaller one-off events.
Stock and express items
No customisation means no setup at all. The 24-hour dispatch range has the lowest minimums because there is nothing to set up — you are buying existing stock.
Minimums apply per variant, not per order
This is the detail that catches people out, and it is worth planning around.
A minimum generally applies to each distinct combination of design, colour and size — because each combination is its own setup. An order of 500 bands in one colour is a single setup. The same 500 split across five colours is five setups of 100, and each of those may sit below the minimum.
So "500 bands" can be comfortably viable or awkward depending entirely on how many variants you split it into. If you need several colours, either raise the total so each variant clears the minimum, or reduce the number of colours.
The same applies to widths and sizes. A mixed-size school order is several variants, not one.
Getting under the minimum
If your genuine need is below the minimum, there are real options.
Use stock colours and designs. No custom setup means the minimum largely disappears.
Reduce variants. One colour at 200 is easier than four colours at 50.
Combine with someone else. Clubs and schools running the same campaign often order together and split the delivery. One setup, one price break, two recipients.
Order for longer than the immediate event. If it is an annual fixture and the band is undated, one run covering several years usually costs less than several small runs.
When a bigger order is genuinely cheaper
Worth checking the total, not the unit price, before deciding you cannot afford more.
Because setup is fixed, moving from 400 to 500 bands can cost very little extra, and occasionally less in total if 500 crosses a price break. Ordering fewer bands for more money is a real and avoidable outcome — always ask for the quote at your number and at the next break up.
The caveat is the one from any stock decision: this only makes sense for undated, unbranded bands you will actually use. Surplus dated bands are not a saving.
Frequently asked questions
Why do custom wristbands have a minimum order quantity?
Because each custom run carries fixed costs — making the mould, setting up the print, mixing to a Pantone reference — that are the same whether you order 100 bands or 10,000. Below a certain quantity those fixed costs dominate and the per-band price becomes unreasonable.
Does the minimum apply to the whole order or each colour?
Generally to each distinct combination of design, colour and size, because each is its own setup. Five colours of 100 is five setups, not one order of 500. If you need several colours, raise the total or reduce the number of variants.
Can I order fewer wristbands than the minimum?
Often, by removing the setup. Stock colours and express range items need no customisation, so the minimum largely disappears. Reducing the number of colours or combining with another group running the same campaign also works.
Is it cheaper per band to order more?
Yes, and steeply at first. Setup cost divided across more bands falls quickly between small and medium quantities, then flattens. The move from 100 to 500 changes the per-band price dramatically; 5,000 to 5,500 barely moves it.
What is the lowest minimum you offer?
It depends on the product. Moulded silicone carries the highest setup and the most meaningful minimum, printed Tyvek is lower, and stock express items are lowest of all because nothing needs setting up. Tell us your quantity and we will point you at the right product.
Working out what your real minimum is
Before asking about minimums, work out the number you actually need, because the answer often makes the question moot.
Count the people, add your spare allowance, and then count the variants — how many distinct colours, sizes and designs that total splits into. Those two numbers, total and variants, are what determine whether your order is straightforward or awkward.
Most orders that run into minimum problems are not small. They are medium orders divided into too many variants. Four hundred bands is a comfortable order; four hundred bands across eight colours and three sizes is twenty-four variants and a difficult conversation.
Reducing variants without losing the plan
If the variant count is the problem, there are usually ways to cut it that do not compromise what you are trying to do.
Use one band colour and vary the print. Where colour is carrying meaning, printed text naming the tier can do the same job on a single band colour.
Drop to two sizes. Adult and youth covers most mixed groups adequately; adding child and toddler is worth it only where genuinely needed.
Stage the order. Order the high-volume variants now and the small ones later, once you know real demand.
