How can I recognise health awareness days in my organisation?

Events like health awareness days and weeks run throughout the year in Australia. They’re a great way to recognise a cause that’s close to your organisation’s heart. Awareness days can also help inspire and engage both staff and clients.

If there’s a health awareness day or week coming up that’s relevant to your organisation, you may be wondering how to recognise it.

We share some tips and tricks to help you make the most of this event, showing your commitment to a cause that’s important to you.

Get social media savvy

Make the most of social media to show support for your chosen awareness day or week. Here’s what you can do to harness the power of digital.

  • Research hashtags relevant to your cause. You can even invent one of your own!
  • Write a blog post for your website before and after the event.
  • Promote your cause and commitment on all your social media channels using photos and quotes from the event.
  • Check out national organisations supporting your cause (for example, Diabetes Australia, Cancer Council and Kidney Health Australia) to see if they have campaign materials you can share.

Involve your local community

If you want to raise your organisation’s profile in your community, now is the perfect time. There are lots of ways to get them on board:

  • Run a design-a-poster contest for local schools.
  • Find someone from your local community who has a connection with your cause and make them the guest of honour at your awareness event.
  • Invite people living nearby to take part in your special events. For example, if you’re supporting International Yoga Day (21 June), you could organise a free community yoga session.

Hold a themed coffee morning

What’s not to love about a coffee morning? You can enjoy delicious treats and beverages and raise awareness of a good cause at the same time. Follow these tips to make your coffee morning a success:

  • Ask staff to donate goodies such as homebaked cakes for sale to raise funds for your chosen cause.
  • You can also charge a small entry fee to be donated to your cause or hold a raffle with delicious treats as prizes.
  • Make it fun by holding a 'bake off' style competition for staff or a 'guess the weight of the cake' competition.

Stage a sponsored event

Organise a sponsored event to complement your cause and to raise both awareness and funds. It could take the form of:

  • A sponsored walk that most people can take part in. Encourage wheelchair users and parents with children in buggies to join in too
  • A 24-hour bike ride. Staff can jump on an exercise bike in a shift of 30 minutes at a time so that the whole 24 hours is covered. This will make a great story for your local media.
  • A tournament of any team game. Teams pay a fee to enter, and you can add in challenges to test their skills.
  • A quiz night to test your staff’s knowledge about your cause, as well as general knowledge too!

Invite an expert to speak about your cause

If there’s a cause close to your organisation’s heart, then why not invite an expert in to talk to your staff and service users? This is a great idea for schools and colleges and can spark lifelong interest and inspiration. For example:

  • To support International Men’s Health Week (14-20 June), invite a health professional to speak to staff about how men can keep healthy and how their loved ones can support them.
  • For R U OK Day (9 September), which promotes mental health issues, an expert can share stress-busting techniques with staff.
  • Dental Health Week (2-8 August) is a great opportunity for a dentist or dental nurse to visit schools and talk to kids about getting into a good routine to take care of their teeth.

Order awareness wristbands

Wear your heart on your sleeve with health awareness wristbands. They are the perfect way to recognise your health awareness event and make your staff, clients and community feel involved.

Here are some of the ways awareness wristbands provide the finishing touch to your event:

  • They can be customised to support any cause. Think mental health awareness wristbands, autism awareness wristbands, diabetes awareness wristbands…there’s no limit!
  • Awareness wristband colours are also available to match the branding of your chosen cause.
  • They are a cost-effective way to say thank you to event participants.
  • They will serve as a reminder of your chosen cause whenever they are worn.
