What four segments buy you, and what they cost

Four colours is the point where a segmented band stops being a colour scheme and starts being a system. That is useful, but it comes with a trade-off worth understanding before you order.

The gain: four things in one band

Four house colours, four divisions, four sponsors, four year levels. A single band carries all of them without anyone needing to read text, which is why schools and multi-sponsor events choose this over two or three.

The cost: each segment gets narrower

The band width is fixed, so four colours means four narrower stripes rather than four clear blocks. At arm’s length a four-colour band reads as a pattern before it reads as four distinct colours. If a steward needs to identify the colour at speed, two colours or three does that job better.

Order the colours deliberately

Segments appear in the sequence you specify. Alternating light and dark reads more clearly than grouping two darks together, and if the colours mean something — a flag, a ranking, a brand palette — the order matters to the people who recognise it.

Keep the message to a few words

The printable area is no larger than on a single-colour band, and usable contrast is smaller. A name and a short phrase fit. Anything longer needs a single-colour debossed band where the whole surface is available.
