The Lenox and Stockbridge police departments and the Lenox VFW are raising funds for the family of U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Michael Stringer, 29, who was injured on Feb. 22 while serving in Afghanistan.

Following treatment in Germany, he is now recovering after additional treatment at a military hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

Red rubber bracelets embossed with Stringer's name and rank have been purchased by the Lenox VFW and will be sold for $5 each. They will be available at some area businesses starting on Monday.

The effort to assist Stringer's family with expenses is being coordinated by Lenox Police Officer Sean Ward, who is also commander of the town's VFW post.

Sgt. Stringer's father is Stockbridge Police Officer Bruce Stringer, who was with him in Texas on Friday along with other family members.

A spokesman at the Brooke Army Medical Center told The Eagle the family declined to release additional details.
