Travis Hall may be small but he sells like a professional. The 7-year-old from unincorporated Leyden Township sold $343 worth of rubber bracelets.

The red, white and blue bracelets read “Remember 9-11-2001” and also “343 Travis Hall 343.”

The number 343 refers to the number of firefighters and paramedics killed during the 2001 terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center in New York City. That’s an event that happened five years before Travis was born.

“He came home one day and said I didn’t realize you were a local hero,” said his father, Scott Hall, who has worked as a Cook County sheriff’s deputy for 20 years. “(Travis) was learning about 9/11 in (Roy) school.” Travis understands the basic history.

“The twin towers and the planes went through them,” he said. He wanted to do something, so he and his father started tossing ideas around. They came up with selling commemorative bracelets. That was in 2011. For the last five weeks Travis has been going to family, friends, neighbors and local businesses to sell bracelets. He reached his goal.

On Sept. 11 Travis, his parents and a few friends stopped by the Northlake fire station and later the Leyden fire station. In Northlake he toured an exercise room, saw a fire engine up close and got to scramble through an ambulance.

He donates the money he raises to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in the name of the Northlake and Leyden fire protection districts. MDA is the designated charity of firefighters, who can be seen once a year at intersections collecting money in rubber fire boots.
