RPET stands for recycled PET — polyester made from post-consumer plastic bottles. RPET fabric wristbands use this recycled content instead of virgin polyester, giving the same full-colour finish while diverting plastic from landfill.

How recycled PET becomes a wristband

From bottle to yarn

Post-consumer PET bottles are collected, sorted, washed and shredded into flake. The flake is melted and extruded into filaments, then spun into polyester yarn. Chemically the result is the same polyester used in conventional bands — what changes is the feedstock, which is existing plastic rather than newly produced resin.

Why the finish matches virgin polyester

This is the practical point: nobody at your event will tell the difference by looking at or wearing the band. RPET webbing takes print, numbering and weave detail the same way and wears the same over a weekend. Choosing recycled content here is not a compromise on how the band looks or performs.

What "recycled" honestly means here

Environmental claims on promotional products are often vaguer than they sound, so it is worth being precise about what this product is and is not.

RPET is recycled, not biodegradable

Recycled polyester is still polyester. It does not break down in soil or compost and should not be marketed as though it will. What it does is divert PET that already exists from landfill and reduce demand for new resin. Reuse beats recycling

The non-locking slider is the most useful environmental feature these bands have, and it is easy to overlook. A band that comes off intact can be kept, re-issued across a multi-day event, or worn again at the next one. A tamper-evident band is cut off and binned after a single entry. If your event does not need the band to prove paid entry, the reusable fit removes far more waste than the fibre choice does.

Ask suppliers to substantiate — including us

Australian consumer law treats unsubstantiated environmental claims as misleading conduct, and the ACCC’s guidance on environmental and sustainability claims sets out what a credible claim looks like: specific, accurate and backed by evidence. If you are buying recycled product for a sustainability programme and need to document it, ask us for the recycled-content details on the specific webbing in your run rather than relying on a general claim — we would rather give you the real figure than a round number.

Ordering for a sustainability programme

Procurement teams usually need something on file rather than a claim on a website. Tell us at quote stage that the order is being reported against a sustainability target and we will confirm what we can substantiate for your specific run — the material specification and the recycled content of the webbing used. That is a more defensible record than a supplier page, and it is the document an auditor will ask for rather than the marketing copy.

Order spares and keep them

Because these bands are reusable, spares are not wasted the way tamper-evident spares are. Unused stock from one event can be issued at the next, which is both cheaper and the lower-waste outcome.

RPET, bamboo or standard woven?

Choose RPET when recycled content is the goal

Pick these when you want the look and durability of a standard woven band but need recycled content in the specification — a sustainability-linked conference, a council or university event, or a brand with a procurement policy to satisfy.

Choose bamboo when plant-based is the goal

Bamboo fabric wristbands are woven from plant fibre rather than any form of plastic. They suit events where the material story matters more than the print ceiling.

Choose on fit and security otherwise

If the band must prove paid entry, a barrel-lock woven band is tamper-evident and cannot be passed on. For a wide stretchy slip-on with no fastener, elastic fabric wristbands are the closest alternative.

Numbering, barcodes and UV weaves

Sequential numbering

Each band carries a unique printed number, letting you reconcile bands issued against tickets sold and void a specific number if one is reported lost. No scanner needed, which suits community events and school functions. Numbering also helps with reusable bands specifically: if the same stock is issued at several events, a number range per event keeps the records separate without needing new artwork each time.

Barcodes and UV weaves

A scannable code turns the band into something a phone or handheld reader checks against a list. A UV thread is invisible in daylight and gives gate staff a fast way to separate a genuine band from a copy. It costs very little to add and is worth specifying for any paid event where counterfeiting is a realistic risk, since the alternative is gate staff making judgement calls about bands they have never seen before. Both must be specified before production, not added later.
