Chances are good that an event you planned to attend was cancelled during the coronavirus pandemic. Events are still being pushed into 2021, which raises the question: When will events return? Will we have events in 2021? Or will we be waiting yet another year before being able to visit our favourite venues?

The closure of these events is hurting not only people's souls but also the economy. It has also put hundreds of thousands of people out of work. Closure of large venues didn't affect just musicians and athletes but all the suppliers and vendors as well. Businesses like food and drink vendors, t-shirt and wrist band suppliers, and security staff all had to adjust.

Safety in Small Numbers

Right now, the wellbeing of event attendees is the number one concern. Large events such as concerts, sporting events, and even vacation hot spots were not designed with social distancing in mind. The idea was to crowd in as many people as possible and hope for the best. In an ideal situation, that works. In a pandemic, it does not.

People are scared, and the virus is on the back of most people's minds when they are in larger gatherings. Until people are assured of safety at these large venues, the chances of them reopening remain small. They were the first to close, and they will likely be the last to fully reopen.

Resurgence Possibilities

We have been warned that reducing social distancing measures could lead to another outbreak. This may have happened with the one event that occurred in 2020. In August, the annual Sturgis Bike Rally was held in South Dakota in the United States. When all was said and done, 414 cases of COVID-19 are believed to have come from the rally. Whether these cases were transmitted to other people is hard to know. While this is not a terrible number of cases considering the 240,000 people that attended, this event was also held outdoors. An indoor event could have a much more disastrous outcome.

While some events may be possible to move to the outdoors and have smaller audiences, that isn't the case for every event. Indoor venues still have some ideas to work out before considering a larger audience.

No Solid Answer

There is no solid information at this time to determine when venues will open up to a large audience. The general consensus among experts is that it is best to wait until herd immunity has kicked in or until there is a vaccine. At this point, it's anyone's guess as to when either of these will occur. Experts say a vaccine may be widely available by mid-2021. And, there are currently events scheduled for April and May. We'll have to wait to see how that plays out. One thing the coronavirus has shown all of us is that humans have the need and desire to be together. We are social beings, and we need each other.
