Donald Keddy tournament Supports Prostate Support Association

WESTVILLE – The Pictou County Prostate Support Association will be the beneficiary of this year’s Don Keddy Memorial Hockey Tournament, which will be held in March at the Westville rink.

“The money that we give will stay in Pictou County,” said Bookie MacDonald, the main tournament organizer who once coached Donald Keddy.

Keddy died of cancer in 1982, at the age of 18.

MacDonald and the prostate support group had 2,000 wrist bands made, and are hoping to put them in local outlets to sell for $2, with the intent to raise even more money.

“I just thought (teaming up with the support group) would be a great idea,” MacDonald said.

About $8,500 was raised in the 2007 tournament.

The wrist bands are dark blue, and feature the words “Strength-Unity-Courage (the prostate support association’s slogan) as well as “DKM 25th Year”.

“There’s a lot of work involved in it, but it’s a success every year. It’s a really good thing for the town of Westville.”

The main tournament is March 28-30, while an Old-timers and a Women’s tournament are April 5-7.

The women’s portion of the event is new this year.

“We want to get as many people as possible involved, and women’s hockey has come a long way in the last few years,” MacDonald added.

Any retailers interested in selling the wrist bands for the Donald Keddy Memorial tournament are asked to call MacDonald, at 396-3106, Ron Boehk of the prostate support group (396-4731) or or Murray Gardner (752-1312), also of the association.
