Brain cancer survivor from Dover participates in Fundraising Event

DOVER — When Kim Chrane was suffering from brain cancer 16 years ago, resources from the Lance Armstrong Foundation were not available to her.

After 16 years, six surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy, it was not until recently that Chrane’s diagnosis was labeled as low-grade brain cancer.

Now, Chrane is an advocate for the association she says “provides such great resources” to cancer patients.

This weekend, Chrane was at The Loft in Dover collecting donations for the Livestrong Challenge. In October, Chrane will travel to Austin, Texas, for a 10-mile bicycle ride to benefit the Lance Armstrong Association.

During the event, Chrane gave away the popular yellow rubber “Livestrong” bracelets and the waitstaff of The Loft wore yellow shirts to show support for Chrane. During her fundraiser, Chrane hoped to bring in $1,000 in donations. Her overall goal is to raise $15,000 before the race on Oct. 12. To date, she has raised close to $3,000 in donations.

“I am very thankful to Kathleen Allen and The Loft owners for pulling this all together within one week,” she said in an e-mail after the event.

This is not Chrane’s first experience working with the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

She said in 2006 she traveled to Washington, D.C., to urge lawmakers to increase cancer funding.

“I never thought I’d be able to participate on Capitol Hill on May 16, after recuperating from my fourth brain surgery within a 12-month period,” Chrane said. “But, I did it.”

Chrane will be accepting donations for the Livestrong foundation on her website, http://austin07.livestrong.org/kchrane.
