Satirist and champion of the American Eagle, Stephen Colbert will auction the cast that helped mend his broken left wrist to benefit the Yellow Ribbon Fund.

The cast will be auctioned on eBay after Thursday night’s “The Colbert Report,” Comedy Central said Wednesday.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a neurodegenerative disease that causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord.  It is more popularly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease after the famous New York Yankee.

It is a pretty nasty disease where you slowly lose the ability to walk, eat, and breathe. ALS has no cure and the treatment during the end stages of the disease involve supportive care, feeding tubes, wheel chairs, and breathing support.

When a group of local Boy Scouts went to England to celebrate the centennial of the Scouting movement, they brought as their “currency” a bundle of patches that made other Scouts’ mouths water.

“We wanted to find what the most American thing was, and we decided [on] hamburgers,” said Zach Jenkins, 15, who had the large patch, which depicted a sesame-seeded bun overflowing with lettuce and tomato, stitched onto his left sleeve.
